Continuing Education for Children (After School)

Children who attend the community center have enormous struggles at school and do not receive as much attention as they wish to have from their parents or relatives. Guardians may deal with illiteracy, parents working full time jobs, and teachers at school who cannot provide individual attention. Due to these circumstances the children find school homework not only difficult but also frustrating. The kids that go to the community centre are there to receive help with their homework, but also support and social assistance in a comfortable study place. With this program we aim at providing help according to their age and specific needs.

  • About Your Location

The project is located in the neighborhood of La Boca, a community center that has activities and workshops for education and recreation. It is only 30 minutes from the volunteer house by bus.

  • Welcome Orientation

All volunteer projects start on Mondays. You should, however, plan to arrive in Buenos Aires on a Friday as you have a Welcome Package. This is an excellent introduction to the city of Buenos Aires and a great way to start your volunteer project.

  • First Project Day

On your first day you will be shown around the whole community center. You will get to know each area and worker - there are over 80 people who work in the center.

  • Weekly Schedule

The volunteers only work at the community center twice a week. It is essential for the volunteer to arrive on time (about 30 minutes before the class starts) so they can plan the activities of the day together with the coordinator. The coordinator of this program knows the particular needs of every child, and will help the volunteers to work with everyone according to their difficulties and the subjects the volunteers wish to teach.

- Help primary and high school students with their homework, eg. in mathematics, English, biology, physics, history, etc.
- Occasionally teach children just starting school how to read and write
- Develop new exercises eg. for teaching English
- Chat with the students about their problems
- Play games and do artistic activities with the kids to keep them interested and help them to learn while playing
- Serve as role models and mentors for the students.
While it is true that sometimes there are too many children in one class, the coordinator will assign them to a specific volunteer so they can work in order. In this way, the volunteer can focus on one or two kids and provide the help and attention they need.

Your hours and days of work are specified in the project description. During the introduction meeting your working hours and days will be discussed and if you want to work more it’s possible. However once you commit to working more hours you have to respect the schedule you have chosen and never miss work. You should always work the minimum number of hours required and in some cases the NGO also recommends a maximum number of hours. Please remember you will also use time travelling to and from your project.

How long should I volunteer?
Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities.

This project is not available from mid-December to mid-March.
